Observing work, including what the colleague sees.

For any mentor who has been observed. An observation is feedback to help you, shared with you by your manager.

Steps

  1. Open My observations. The top says how many wait for you.
  2. Look at Upcoming observations for those booked ahead.
  3. Open one under Shared observations.
  4. Read Observer feedback and the ratings.
  5. Choose your response, such as Acknowledge or Agree with actions.
  6. Write your thoughts in Your reflection and add Comments (optional).
  7. Press Send response.
  8. Press Mark done on an action when you finish it, then Sign observation.

If it goes wrong

  • If you disagree with a fact, choose Request correction and say what is wrong.
  • If you want changes to an action, choose Suggest changes.
  • If you cannot agree, choose Acknowledge without agreement. It is recorded.
  • If your response was not saved, check it and try again.

How it links together

Your reply goes back to the observer. Done actions show on your development timeline. Your manager sees the same record when they next open your audit.

What you can see

Only observations your manager has chosen to share. Internal ones are not shown to you.

Your response options

  • Acknowledge says you have read it.
  • Agree with actions says you accept the plan.
  • Suggest changes asks for a change to the actions.
  • Request correction asks the observer to correct a point.
  • Acknowledge without agreement records that you disagree.

Your reflection

Reflection is your own account of what went well and what you would do differently. It is part of the record. Be honest and specific.

Development actions

Actions have a date and an owner. Mark yours done when they are done, and say how if asked.

Signing

Signing shows you have seen the final version. You can download a PDF of the finished observation.

If it feels unfair

Say so in your comments and talk to your manager. Use your organisation's process if it is not resolved.

Questions people ask

Why can't I see an observation about me?

Your manager may have kept it internal. They choose when it is shared with you.

What does acknowledge mean?

That you have read it. It does not mean you agree.

What if something in it is wrong?

Choose Request correction and explain. The observer can correct it.

Do I have to sign?

Signing is how the final version is closed. Ask your manager if you are unsure.

Can I get a copy?

Yes. Use Download PDF once it is finished.

Who sees my reflection?

The observer and your manager, as part of the observation.
